Our Camp Kesem Journey

Finding Hope and Healing

Life has a way of throwing curveballs when we least expect them. For me, that curveball came in the form of a breast cancer diagnosis. As a mother of three wonderful kids, the news was nothing short of devastating. My world, which was once filled with the daily hustle and bustle of family life, suddenly became a whirlwind of doctor's appointments, treatments, and endless uncertainty. I remember the day I had to sit down with my kids, 7, 5, 3  to tell them about my diagnosis. Their faces, filled with confusion and fear, broke my heart. How could I explain something so complex and frightening to them? How could I reassure them when I was so scared myself?

In the midst of our family’s struggle, we discovered Camp Kesem. Camp Kesem provides a free week-long summer camp for kids whose parents have or had cancer. It sounded too good to be true – a place where my kids could find joy and support, surrounded by peers who understood what they were going through. My two older children would qualify for the summer camp. My youngest had to wait to join another year.

As the summer approached, I hesitated. Was it the right time to send them away? Would they be okay without me? Despite my worries, we decided to give it a try. Our kids needed a break from the stress that had taken over our lives. They needed a chance to be kids again.

The day we dropped them off at camp was filled with mixed emotions. My husband and I watched as our children, a little apprehensive but also excited, joined their groups and met their counselors. The warmth and enthusiasm of the Camp Kesem staff were immediately evident. These were people who understood our situation and genuinely cared about making a difference in our children’s lives.

Throughout the week, we received updates and photos. Seeing my girls’ smile creating arts and crafts, their laughter during a balloon fight, and their delight at making new friends brought tears to my eyes. For the first time in months, they were genuinely happy and carefree. Camp Kesem provided a sanctuary where they could escape the harsh reality of my illness and just be kids.

When we picked them up at the end of the week, the transformation was remarkable. They were filled with stories of new friends, fun activities, and heartfelt moments. More importantly, they had found a support network that extended beyond camp. They met children who shared their experiences and counselors who became mentors and friends. Camp Kesem had given them the tools to cope with our family’s challenges and reminded them that they were not alone. As a mother, watching my children regain their joy and resilience was the greatest gift. Camp Kesem not only provided a memorable summer experience but also instilled a sense of hope and strength in our family. It reminded us that even in the darkest times, there are moments of light and love.

All of my kids have returned to Camp Kesem and they had another outstanding experience. My journey with breast cancer is ongoing, but knowing that my kids have the support of Camp Kesem gives me immense comfort. This incredible organization has made a profound impact on our lives, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

To any parents out there facing a similar battle, I encourage you to consider Camp Kesem. It is more than just a camp; it is a community of compassion, understanding, and unwavering support. Our family found hope and healing through Camp Kesem, and I believe yours can too.

In the face of adversity, we often discover our greatest strengths. Our children learn resilience, compassion, and the power of community. They become warriors of hope, finding joy amidst challenges and embracing the beauty of life, even in its toughest moments. Camp Kesem embodies this spirit, and it has been a beacon of light for our family.
